Long/short ratio

A ratio above 1 means more longs than shorts.

Definition

A ratio above 1 means more longs than shorts. The venues measure different things: Binance publishes the ratio of all accounts, of top-trader accounts and of top-trader positions; Bybit the ratio of accounts; on Hyperliquid Blockmetric computes it from the real tracked positions (USD and wallet counts).

In one sentence: Long/short ratio: longs divided by shorts. Above 1 = more longs. Venues count accounts or top-trader positions differently.

How we compute it

Formula

Hyperliquid (USD) = long USD ÷ short USD of the tracked positions
Hyperliquid (wallets) = long wallets ÷ short wallets
Binance, Bybit: the ratio the venue publishes
  • Every 5 minutes for the top 40 coins: Binance globalLongShortAccountRatio, topLongShortAccountRatio and topLongShortPositionRatio, Bybit account-ratio.
  • Hyperliquid: long USD ÷ short USD of the tracked positions at the same time (and long wallets ÷ short wallets).
  • Long history views add a separate daily line of every open Hyperliquid position from the daily snapshot taken about 00:00 UTC (long USD ÷ short USD), never merged into the tracked line.

How to read it

  • Compare the same variant over time rather than different variants with each other.
  • Accounts long while top traders’ positions are short is a common divergence worth noticing.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing an account ratio with a position ratio. They count different things and can point in opposite directions at the same time.
  • Reading a ratio of 2 as twice the money long. On an account ratio it means twice the accounts; the USD can be on the other side.

Honest limits

  • Account ratios ignore position size: one large short and ten small longs give 10.
  • Hyperliquid covers tracked wallets only (the daily line: every position).

Questions and answers

Which long/short ratio counts real money?

The Hyperliquid USD ratio, computed from real positions (long USD ÷ short USD), and Binance’s top-trader position ratio. Account ratios count accounts, not size.
