Mark price

The mark price is the price a venue uses to value open positions.

Definition

The mark price is the price a venue uses to value open positions. It is set by the venue, not by Blockmetric: liquidations are triggered when the mark reaches a position’s liquidation price, which is why every distance and every cluster hit on Blockmetric is measured against the mark.

In one sentence: Mark price: the price a venue uses to value open positions. Liquidations and unrealised PnL are measured against it, not against the last trade.

How we compute it

Formula

mark versus oracle = (mark − oracle) ÷ oracle (the premium)
distance to liquidation = (liquidation price − mark) ÷ mark
  • Hyperliquid: read from the market contexts (WebSocket, REST metaAndAssetCtxs as fallback) every 30 seconds, together with the oracle price, funding and open interest.
  • Binance and Bybit: the mark price their public endpoints publish, every 60 seconds.
  • The Hyperliquid mark samples (30 seconds) are the reference for the cluster hit rate and for distances to liquidation.
  • A security event fires when a Hyperliquid mark stays 2 % or more away from its oracle on 2 consecutive updates with $5M or more open interest.

How to read it

  • The coin pages show the Hyperliquid mark for Hyperliquid markets, the exchange mark for markets that trade only there.
  • A mark far from the oracle is a premium; funding pulls the two together.

Common mistakes

  • Using the last traded price to judge a liquidation. Venues liquidate on the mark, which can differ from the last trade during fast moves.
  • Expecting the same mark on every venue. Each venue computes its own from its own inputs.

Honest limits

  • Each venue computes its own mark; the same coin can have slightly different marks on two venues.
  • Between two samples the mark is not seen (30 seconds on Hyperliquid, 60 seconds on the exchanges).

Questions and answers

Why can a position be liquidated when the last trade never reached its liquidation price?

Venues measure liquidations against the mark price, not the last trade. The mark can reach the liquidation price while the last trade does not.
