CVD (cumulative volume delta)

Every trade has an aggressor: the side that crossed the spread.

Definition

Every trade has an aggressor: the side that crossed the spread. CVD adds up aggressive buys minus aggressive sells over time; it rises when buyers hit asks and falls when sellers hit bids.

In one sentence: CVD (cumulative volume delta): USD bought by takers minus USD sold by takers, added up over the window. Rising = aggressive buyers dominated.

How we compute it

Formula

delta (bar) = taker buy USD − taker sell USD
CVD (t) = Σ delta of every bar from the start of the window to t
  • Trades from the Hyperliquid, Binance and Bybit WebSocket streams of the covered coins; the aggressor side comes from each venue’s trade flag.
  • Fills of one taker order at one timestamp are merged into one print; minute bars of buy and sell USD are stored, then hourly bars up to 400 days.

How to read it

  • Price up with CVD up = buying pressure from takers; price up with CVD flat or down = the move came from passive orders or short covering.
  • Compare perp and spot CVD where both exist.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing the CVD level of two windows. CVD starts at zero at the window start, so only its direction and slope inside one window compare.
  • Counting every fill as a trade. One taker order that fills many resting orders is merged into one print.

Honest limits

  • Only covered coins and venues (top coins by open interest); spot only for BTC and ETH on Binance.
  • Free plans see BTC, ETH and HYPE for the last 24 hours; Pro adds every covered coin and 7 days, Desk everything stored.

Questions and answers

Why does the CVD start at zero?

CVD is a running sum from the start of the chosen window. A new window starts the sum again, so the shape inside one window is what carries the information.
